If you are planning on visiting Jamaica, one of the most popular things to do on your trip will be to climb Dunn’s River Falls. The trail is well marked, but there are still quite a few people who have trouble finding the trailhead.

Must Have Items for your Trip

You will definitely need some sunscreen. A hat and other wide-brimmed sun protection for your head and face would be a good idea. Naturally you will want a bathing suit or swim trunks. Wear shoes that can get wet (or rent them there). You will also want some Ting (or any non-alcoholic beverage) to cool off after you’ve finished climbing. Be prepared for security to ask you if you have any water as they don’t allow glass containers on site.

Get There Early

Try and get to Dunn’s River Falls before it opens. There are only a few hours when you can climb up and down its slippery rocks (about five or six hours in total) without getting into a line. Your best bet for being first in line—if you’re not staying at one of Ocho Rios’ luxurious resorts—is to go for an early morning jog.

Walk, Don’t Climb with Sandals on

If you’re not wearing proper footwear when attempting to climb, there’s a chance you could slip and fall. Not only does sandals expose your feet to sharp rocks on the way up, but it also leaves them prone to injuries if you were to fall down. Better safe than sorry. If climbing with sandals isn’t for you, rent water shoes from one of many shops in Ocho Rios.

Dress Strategically

You’re in for a long day, so plan accordingly. Wear a bathing suit under your clothes to avoid having to strip down. Then wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. If you are going to wear jewelry or glasses, tape them off before starting up. They can easily fall off as you climb. Towels around your waist and shoulders will provide some cushioning if you fall (which of course we hope you won’t!) and help keep your belongings secure while you climb.
